Convicted killer charged with murdering cellmate found not guilty by reason of insanity

A convicted killer charged of murdering his cellmate has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Lancaster County District Court records say Angelo Bol, 44, was charged with first degree murder after investigators believed he was responsible for the death of his cellmate at the Nebraska State Penitentiary.

The court ruled in May 2023 that he was mentally competent to stand trial, and a bench trial was held on December 13.

The judge in the case took the matter under advisement, and issued the verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity on Tuesday.

The next step in the case is a hearing to determine if he is a danger to himself or others based on mental illness or other factors.

Court records say that hearing will be held on March 20, 2024.

Corrections officials said Kevin Carter, 20, was found unresponsive in November 2020 and was later pronounced dead.

Bol was originally convicted of murder when he shot and killed his co-worker in the parking lot of Gibbon Pack in 2015.
