Pair of ‘skinny’ horses surrendered to animal shelter in Massachusetts

Two horses described as “skinny but otherwise okay” were recently surrendered to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

“The horses, 22-year-old mare ‘Fancy’ and 18-year-old Haflinger male ‘Goldie,’ had been living on a Central Massachusetts property and now call Nevins Farm their temporary home,” according to a press release the MSPCA issued Wednesday.

The animals were surrendered Nov. 8.

“Overwhelmed and unable to meet their care needs, their former owner opted to surrender the animals to the MSPCA’s care,” the release noted.

While the horses are underweight, MSPCA-Angell Director Mike Keiley said they are being tended to by staff and volunteers at Nevins Farm.

There, the animals have access to more than 55 acres of pasture, a barn, food and water, as well as veterinary care.

Still, Keiley said they are vulnerable heading into the winter season.

“Combined, these horses are about two to three hundred pounds underweight and they definitely would have struggled over the next several months if they were not surrendered,” Keiley said. “Our primary objective now is to help them safely gain the weight they need so that we ultimately can place them for adoption.”

Keiley said the horses have been placed on “a careful re-feeding plan,” with hopes that they will return to a healthy weight within a few months.

Then, they will be available for adoption.

“They’re doing so well now that we would like to adopt them out so that they can continue to recuperate in their new home,” Keiley said. “Despite their current condition, they’re very friendly and social horses, and we believe they’ll make excellent companions for the right adopter.”

Keiley said anyone interested in adopting or making a donation should apply at mspca.org/Nevinsadopt.
