Be careful with your pets

In the last month, two social media posts highlighted cat deaths in the Northwest Crossing area. The first came on May 1, as NextDoor user and San Antonian Kimberly Summers warned neighbors that her cat, Socks, was found decapitated and with her front legs cut off. On Sunday, fellow San Antonian and Northwest Crossing resident Amy Thorne added that another cat’s body was found.

Both users said they filed a police report after finding the bodies.

The posts combined for nearly 500 reactions on the social media platform and more than 400 comments.

“I reported it to the police but I fear that people who harm animals will eventually harm people,” Summers wrote in her post. “Please keep your fur babies inside and safe.”

Summers told the Express-News that following the experience, she didn’t sleep for days.

“I wish this was on the news,” Summers wrote in a social media message. “I am suffering from anxiety and concerned about my safety and my neighbors.”

San Antonio Animal Care Services reports having no record of such incidents, but when the incident was described to ACS officials, they said it sounds like a coyote attack.

“Our pets, including cats, are always safest inside with us,” Lisa Norwood, public relations manager for ACS, wrote in an email. “Outdoor cats are at greater risk of getting disease from unvaccinated animals, hit by cars or attacked by other animals including dogs or coyotes.”

Norwood also noted that pets running into wild animals is less likely if they are indoors, as San Antonio is surrounded by urban wildlife.
