Reward offered for church fire information

MELROSE, Minn. — Investigators are offering a reward of up to $7,500 for information leading to the arrest of suspected arsonists in the March burning of a Melrose church.

The fire at the Church of St. Mary in Melrose was started in the afternoon of March 11 by incendiary devices, according to a press release from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Fire investigators place the damage to the west side of the church at more than $5 million, the release said.

The church was built in 1898 and is on the U.S. National Register of Historic PLaces.

The reward is being offered jointly through the ATF and the state Department of Public Safety State Fire Marshal Division. Tips can be submitted by phone to the ATF at (888) 283-3473 or the DPS at (800) 723-2020.
