ALBANY — City police said they arrested a 43-year-old Albany woman who vacated her Western Avenue apartment but left her five dogs and a cat there for several days without food and water. She is charged with six counts of animal cruelty and is scheduled to appear in city court on Monday.

During their investigation last month, officers found five mixed breed dogs — one adult male, one adult female and three puppies — inside, as well as an adult male cat. The apartment was also contaminated with feces, urine and garbage, police said.

All six animals were safely removed from the apartment and taken to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society where they were each treated for malnutrition and dehydration, police said.

They are currently at the shelter.
