Former Pawtucket man convicted of animal cruelty in dog’s death

A former Pawtucket man has been convicted of animal cruelty in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s dog.

Devon Hernandez pled no contest on Tuesday to a felony animal cruelty charge related to killing his girlfriend’s 1 1/2-year-old Pomeranian dog.

Police previously told NBC 10 surveillance footage shows Hernandez pick up the dog and throw it down “forcefully.” Police said Hernandez kicked the dog several times, causing the dog to scream and attempt to hide.

According to a police report, Hernandez told his girlfriend he hit the dog because it urinated on the bed. He later told police the dog ran off when he brought it outside. The dog was eventually found inside a Price Rite shopping bag at the intersection of Whitmarsh and Updike streets in Providence.

Hernandez will serve two years in prison and was ordered to undergo mental health counseling.

According to the Rhode Island Society for The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Harrison has been held at the Adult Correctional Institute after his arrest as a probation violator. As a result, his sentence takes into account the time served since Nov. 5, 2021.
