Owner charged with animal cruelty for death of dog shut in Westfield apartment

WESTFIELD — A woman confined her puppy in a bedroom of her Westfield apartment last summer and left it there to die, according to police.

When the woman’s lease was not renewed, she moved out, leaving the partially mummified remains of her young chow chow dog for the property manager to discover, according to court documents. The woman, Ramona J. Holland, 22, now of 140 Chestnut St., Apt. 307, Springfield, was arraigned last week at Westfield District Court on animal cruelty charges.

Holland’s lawyer did not respond to a request for comment this week.
