Two women charged with animal cruelty

BUCKHANNON — Two women have been arrested as a result of an investigation in which 80 dogs were found inside a single-wide trailer, officials said.

Rebecca Clark, 41, and Denise Clark, 61, of Selbyville Road in Rock Cave, were arrested Oct. 6 and each charged with one count each of animal cruelty, operating an unregistered kennel and conspiracy, the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office announced.

Both were arraigned in Upshur County Magistrate Court and were released on $5,000 bond each.

On Oct. 4, the following press release was sent out by the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office:

“On the morning of Oct. 3, Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputies, Upshur County Animal Control and Lewis County Animal Control executed a search warrant on Selbyville Road in Upshur County,” the release states.

“The search warrant was for suspected unlicensed breeding of dogs and failure to pay dog taxes. As a result of the search 80 dogs were seized from inside a single-wide trailer. The animals were kept in deplorable conditions,” the release concludes.
