Conroe Noon Lions: ‘Legend of the Lion’ dinner, dance set for Feb. 24

Greetings from the Conroe Noon Lions Club, the “Greatest Lions Club in the World.” This week marked another great luncheon meeting with a great group of people. Our meeting started with our usual songs, pledges, invocation and introduction of guests all led by past presidents of the club. The Community Partner of the week was Keating Honda of Conroe. Thank you for your support of the Conroe Noon Lions Club.

VP Warner Phelps announced the upcoming “Legend of the Lions” – Dinner/Dance & Auction taking place on Feb. 24. This social and fundraising event benefits the charities of Conroe Noon Lions Club. It is a wonderful opportunity to also get to know the Community Partners that support our service in the community. This year’s theme is “Mardi Gras” so plan to come out in your finest Mardi Gras regalia and party.

Lion Helen Thornton reminded all Lions about the upcoming District 2-S-2 Midwinter Conference being held Jan. 21-22 in our own backyard at Margaritaville Lake Resort on Lake Conroe. She urged Lions to continue to register for the conference through the district website at www.lions2s2.org as there is still availability. The registration fee will include the conference, learning tracts, service opportunities, food, and tickets to the annual Bob Dowden Dinner which benefits our beloved Texas Lions Camp. Hotel rooms will need to be booked directly through the resort. Conference room rates are available.

Lion Zac Stephens announced that Conroe Noon Lions Club will again be hosting a “Giving – Warms the Heart” Blood Drive. The drive will be held on Jan. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the convention center. We would like to have at least 40 people sign up to donate. Not only will those who participate receive a t-shirt, but they will also receive a Starbucks gift card.

You do not have to be a Lion to participate in any of these events or projects! Please contact the club office for more information if you are interested in participating.

Conroe Noon Lions Club supports a “Hometown Hero” every year. This year, we have the privilege of supporting Nolan Christensen, US Navy, and grandson of our own Lion and Past President Paul Klinepeter. We were blessed to have Nolan visit our club today while on leave and took the opportunity to provide him with a gift. We also had representatives from Saddle River Range, Thom Brosch and Toby Ragsdale, visit our club today with a special gift for Nolan. They received a $900 gift card donation specifically designated for a military member and chose to bless Nolan with it. Thank you, Saddle River Range, for your heart for our Hometown Hero.

Our speaker today was Robert Boudwin, best known as “Clutch the Bear,” mascot for the Houston Rockets. Robert shared stories of his 21-year career as Clutch; but his main goal for our program was to bring awareness to organ donation on behalf of the Todd Krampitz Foundation. Robert has run the Houston Half Marathon three times in full “Clutch” costume to help bring about awareness. Organ donation became personal to Robert in 2012 when his father received a double lung transplant. Over 120,000 people are on the transplant list in America, so the need is great. It only takes 60 seconds to become a doner. Just go to www.donatelifetexas.org or www.donatelifeamerica.org to sign up. Thank you, Robert, for sharing your stories and for reminding us that lives can be saved by just becoming an organ donor.
