Kiely Rodni – live: Missing teen’s car seen in new image as police plan to cut back Truckee search

Investigators searching for Kiely Rodni have revealed that her cellphone last pinged close to a vast lake running around the campground where more than 200 teenagers and young adults descended for a party 10 days ago.

Kiely was last seen sometime between 12.30am to 1am on 6 August near the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee. Her car – a silver 2013 Honda CRV – is also missing.

Nevada County Sheriff’s Office Captain Sam Brown said that the last known cellphone location data placed the teenager next to Prosser Lake at around 12.30am. Her phone went out of service after this time.

Divers have searched the lake but so far turned up no sign of the missing teen.

Investigators are also combing the campground and surrounding areas and over 1,100 tips have flooded in from the public.

One tip led to a “potential burial site” over the weekend but, following an extensive search, crews only dug up a dead dog.

Kiely’s mother Lindsey Rodni-Nieman is pleading for information from partygoers, telling The Independent: “We are desperate for any other teens to come out and share the last pieces of the story that nobody seems to be able to piece together.”

In an image released at a press conference on Monday, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office provided a picture of the 2013 Honda CR-V belonging to Kiely, and which remains missing as well as the 16-year-old.

Sheriff’s have confirmed Kiely’s vehicle has a ram sticker right below the rear wiper blade and a Californian license plate number: 8YUR127.

“As the investigation into Kiely’s disappearance continues, we urge the public to call our tip line immediately if they spot a 2013 Honda CR-V with that same sticker under the rear wiper blade, as we believe it is an identifying attribute of her vehicle,” the sheriff’s office added.

Police find new video of Kiely Rodni wearing ‘odd future’ sweatshirt on night she vanished

11:00 , Gino Spocchia

Kiely Rodni was wearing a sweatshirt with the words “odd future” emblazoned across it on the night she vanished without a trace at a campground party, according to police.

Placer County Sheriff’s Office revealed on Sunday that the 16-year-old was spotted in video footage on the evening of 5 August at the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee, California.

In the footage, she is wearing the white hoodie covered in the phrase “odd future” in pink letters.

It is unclear whether Kiely was wearing or in possession of the sweatshirt when she was last seen at around 12.30am the following morning.

However, this is the second sweatshirt the public has been alerted about in connection to the missing teenager after investigators previously revealed that she had borrowed a hoodie with the Lana Del Ray lyrics “you don’t want to be forgotten, you just want to disappear” from someone at the party.

Kiely Rodni’s mother says ‘nothing out of the ordinary’ on day she vanished

05:00 , Rachel Sharp

Kiely Rodni’s mother Lindsey Rodni-Nieman said that there was “nothing out of the ordinary” with Kiely on the day she vanished without a trace.

Ms Rodni-Nieman told The Independent last week that she last saw Kiely on Friday morning and then spoke to her by text message that night – not long before her last known sighting.

It was just like any normal day.

Kiely had come downstairs in their home that morning and mother and daughter chatted about their plans for the day.

“It was ‘morning, hi, love you’ and talking about plans for the day – just a little check-in as normal,” said Ms Rodni-Nieman.

“She was going to see some friends and maybe go to the gym… We also talked about her plans to go camping the following night. And then we said ‘have a great day and love you’.”

She said: “She did not seem out of the ordinary at all.

“Everything seemed the same, she had a big smile on her face and she was ready to greet the day. She was having a good day and week and was excited about going camping the following night. We had a great exchange.”

The mother and daughter stayed in contact throughout the day and last spoke at around 11.30pm that night when Kiely texted to say she would be setting off on the 25-30 minute drive home from the party.

“She said she’d be leaving at 12.15 and was going to start heading home,” said Ms Rodni-Nieman.

That was the last time she heard from her daughter.

Kiely’s mother reveals she almost didn’t go to camp party

02:00 , Rachel Sharp

Kiely’s mother has revealed that her daughter almost didn’t go to the campground party the night she disappeared as she issued a gut-wrenching plea to local teenagers to help “piece together” what happened.

Lindsey Rodni-Nieman spoke to The Independent on Thursday as the search for her missing 16-year-old daughter entered its fifth day and investigators are no closer to getting answers as to her whereabouts.

She said that Kiely had planned to go to a car show in Reno with her mother on Friday night but texted her during the day to say that she was going to go to a party at the Prosser Family Campground instead.

Ms Rodni-Nieman said she wishes Kiely had never gone to the party that night and had joined her at the car show that night. But she said thinking like that is “not helpful”.

Lead about ‘potential burial site’ proves to be false alarm

01:00 , Rachel Sharp

A lead about a “potential burial site” on the Prosser Family Campground proved to be a false alarm over the weekend as search teams instead uncovered the remains of a dead dog.

Search and rescue teams found the site and it was secured by the FBI and local sheriff’s offices while a day-long dig got under way.

But the lead turned out to be a dead end after the dig only turned up the dead dog.

Kiely’s family had been notified of the potential burial site.

Last cellphone ping places Kiely Rodni near lake on night she vanished

Monday 15 August 2022 23:30 , Rachel Sharp

The last ping from Kiely Rodni’s cellphone has placed the missing teenager at the edge of a lake at the campground where she was last seen more than one week ago.

Captain Sam Brown of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office revealed at a press conference on Sunday that the last known location from Kiely’s cellphone was at around 12.30am close to Prosser Lake – the constructed reservoir that goes around the Prosser Family Campground.

He said that it is difficult to get an “exact pinpoint” for the cellphone location data and that it is also possible that the cellphone did continue to ping after that time.

“Just because it was last pinged there, that doesn’t mean that’s where the phone stopped pinging,” he said.

“The ping for the data points was near the water. It’s hard to tell an exact pinpoint.”

Divers have been searching the lake for any signs of the missing 16-year-old but have recovered nothing to date.

Monday 15 August 2022 22:50 , Andrea Blanco

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office clarified on Monday that Kiely is believed to have been wearing a pink and white hoodie reading “odd future,” at the time she vanished.

Another black hoodie with Lana del Rey’s lyrics “you don’t want to be forgotten, you just want to disappear” had been loaned to her. Police said they believe it was in her possession.

“We did receive video of Kiely at the party wearing the white [and pink] shirt …To clear up any confusion, that same day Kiely was loaned the black sweatshirt,” public information officer Angela Musallam said.

Authorities said they don’t plan to release footage of Kiely wearing the sweatshirt at the party at this time.

Police continue desperate search for Kiely

Monday 15 August 2022 22:24 , Andrea Blanco

As the search enters its tenth day, investigators struggle to find new leads.

During a press conference on Monday, authorities said 50 investigators are actively working on the case.

They said that lead investigators will now be focusing on specifics about the case and potential leads, as opposed to having large personnel searching nearby areas.

“After this week, we will be modifying things to a task-force style. That means our resources will continue to move forward, but in somehow of a different manner … It doesn’t mean that the investigation will stop. It will keep moving forward,” said Placer County Sheriff Lt. Josh Barnhart.

Authorities continue search by land and air

Monday 15 August 2022 20:55 , Rachel Sharp

Multiple law enforcement agencies are continuing their search for the missing teen by land and air – but appear to have at least temporarily called off the search of the waterways around the campground.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office and Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said in an update on Monday that “searchers from across the state continue their search on the ground and in the air”.

“Currently, we only have information on Kiely’s last known location before she went missing,” the statement said.

“Detectives from local, state, and federal agencies continue to follow up on leads and conduct interviews.”

The update revealed that there are currently no marine or dive teams working on the case. More than 200 law enforcement officials are working on the case and have altogether spent more than 14,646 hours looking for the missing teen.

Volunteers resume search for missing teen

Monday 15 August 2022 17:55 , Rachel Sharp

Volunteers are resuming their search for the missing teen at 10am local time (1pm ET).

Around 100 members of the community have voluntarily joined in the search for Kiely over the last 10 days.

The huge manpower comes on top of the more than 300 law enforcement personnel who have spent upwards of 12,000 cumulative hours combing the campground and the nearby areas for the 16-year-old.

Kiely’s last known contacts

Monday 15 August 2022 17:25 , Rachel Sharp

Kiely spoke to several people not long before she vanished in the early hours of 6 August.

She was last spotted at the party at around 12.30am and her cellphone’s last known location was also around that time.

Kiely’s mother Lindsey Rodni-Nieman told The Independent last week that her daughter sent her a text message at 11.30pm saying that she would be leaving the party in around 45 minutes. The drive home takes around 25-30 minutes.

“She said she’d be leaving at 12.15 and was going to start heading home,” said Ms Rodni-Nieman.

The teen’s friend Samantha Smith told The Independent that she last spoke to Kiely on the phone at around 12.30am. She had been planning to get a ride home from the party with Kiely but they changed their plans, telling each other to “get home safe” as Ms Smith said Kiely had drunk too much to drive.

Kiely’s boyfriend Jagger Westfall told KTXL that he texted his 16-year-old girlfriend to tell her to “be safe” and “don’t do anything stupid” that night. He said he received a final message from her at around 10.30pm where she empathised with what he had gone through that day.

“Then at 10.30, she responded to what I was saying, and just said, ‘Oh, I’m sorry that you’re going through that’,” he said. “And that was the last time I heard from her.”

Lead about ‘potential burial site’ proves to be false alarm

A lead about a “potential burial site” on the Prosser Family Campground proved to be a false alarm over the weekend as search teams instead uncovered the remains of a dead dog.

Search and rescue teams found the site and it was secured by the FBI and local sheriff’s offices while a day-long dig got under way.

But the lead turned out to be a dead end after the dig only turned up the dead dog.

Kiely’s family had been notified of the potential burial site.

Over 1,200 tips received from public

Monday 15 August 2022 16:24 , Rachel Sharp

Investigators have received more than 1,200 tips from the public about the disappearance of Kiely Rodni – but appear to be no closer to tracking down the missing teen.

The search entered day 10 on Monday with a huge amount of manpower including 307 law enforcement personnel, three air teams and two water/dive teams all drafted in to help.

In total, officials have spent 12,438 hours trying to find the teen.

Despite the number of tips, law enforcement officials and Kiely’s family are urging people who saw her at the party to come forward and share what they know.

Last known location for Kiely Rodni’s cellphone was by large lake

Monday 15 August 2022 15:44 , Rachel Sharp

The last known location data from Kiely’s cellphone was at around 12.30am close to Prosser Lake – the constructed reservoir that goes around the Prosser Family Campground.

Investigators said that it is difficult to get an “exact pinpoint” for the cellphone location data and that it is also possible that the cellphone did continue to ping after that time.

“Just because it was last pinged there, that doesn’t mean that’s where the phone stopped pinging,” Captain Sam Brown of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office told SFGate.

“The ping for the data points was near the water. It’s hard to tell an exact pinpoint.”

Divers have been searching the lake for any signs of the missing 16-year-old but have recovered nothing to date.

However, the search is complicated by the water’s depth of around 57 feet and poor visibility, officials admitted.

Sweatshirt is second connected with Kiely Rodni

Monday 15 August 2022 14:45 , Gino Spocchia

A sweatshirt with the words “odd future” emblazoned across it on the night Kiely Rodni vanished is the second sweatshirt the public has been alerted about in connection to the missing teenager.

Placer County Sheriff’s Office revealed on Sunday that the 16-year-old was spotted in video footage on the evening of 6 August wearing a white hoodie which features the phrase “odd future” repeatedly written across it in pink letters.

Investigators previously revealed that she had borrowed a hoodie with the Lana Del Ray lyrics “you don’t want to be forgotten, you just want to disappear” earlier on in the search.

Rachel Sharp reports:

Police have spoken to only ‘a fraction’ of party attendees

Monday 15 August 2022 13:45 , Gino Spocchia

A spokesperson for the Placer County Sheriff’s Office has said investigators have only spoken to “a fraction” of the few hundred people in attendance at the same party Kiely went missing from.

Angela Musallam, a public information officer, told NBC Bay Area on Saturday that about 700 leads have been processed out of more than 1,000 tips. That means several hundred remain to be probed.

Ms Musallam said no tip has led to finding Kiely or information about her whereabouts since her disappearance from a camp party. The teenager’s car or cell phone also remains unfound.

“The most frustrating thing is the lack of cooperation of some of those juveniles who were at that party Friday evening,” the police spokesperson said. “And we can’t stress it enough, you’re not gonna get in trouble, we don’t want to get anybody in trouble, we just want to know where Kiely is.”

Police frustrated at another failed lead

Volunteers helping with the search for Kiely have been using an app to track their movements around the heavily-wooded region.

The app called Caltopo allows searchers to map out what ground they’ve covered and share that information with fellow volunteers and law enforcement, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Kiely’s family set up an RV site where volunteers from across the state can convene to join the search.

Police release image of sweatshirt worn at party

Monday 15 August 2022 10:47 , Gino Spocchia

Police have released an image of a sweatshirt worn by Kiely on the night of the party when she went missing.

In what was described as “developed information”, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook update on Sunday night that “Kiely was seen in a video earlier in the evening at the party wearing the white sweatshirt pictured in this photo.”

The image showed a white sweatshirt with pink letters spelling out “odd future”. The garment had a hood.

It is unclear if Kiely was wearing the sweatshirt when she was last seen at around 12.30am on 6 August near a campground in Truckee, California.

“We are asking anyone who may remember seeing Kiely that evening to please reach out to us as we continue our search for her,” the sheriff’s office added on Sunday, more than a week since the teenager’s disappearance.
