In 2010, Senior Chief Bob Dombrowski retired from the Detroit Fire Department, 38 years to the day after he first reported for duty. Then he wrote a book about his career, “38 Years: A Detroit Firefighter’s Story,” released by New York-based Page Publishing in 2014. In this excerpt, Dombrowski describes a dangerous rescue in 1978that led to his first department citation. Dombrowski, 71, grew up in Detroit and graduated from Cody High School. He lives on Grosse Ile.
