Catawba man saves ’67 Chevelle from house fire but home heavily damaged

A man saved his 1967 Chevelle from a house fire on Friday afternoon but he could not save the home’s kitchen.

Firefighters from the town of Catawba said they saw flames shooting through the roof of a home on Fifth Street SW when they arrived around 1 p.m., according to Catawba Fire Chief Donald Robinson.

The homeowner arrived at approximately the same time as the firefighters and rescued his prized Chevrolet from the basement of the home, Robinson said.

No injuries were reported but the home suffered heavy damage, especially in the kitchen, according to Robinson.

No cause for the fire has been determined but Robinson said the fire did not appear suspicious.

Firefighters from Catawba, Oxford, Sherrills Ford, Claremont and Bandys responded to the blaze, along with Catawba County EMS and the county fire marshal.
