Off-duty Chelmsford firefighter performs CPR to help save man who went into cardiac arrest playing hockey in New Hampshire

The quick actions of an off-duty firefighter helped save the life of a man who went into cardiac arrest while playing ice hockey Sunday in Hudson, N.H., officials said.

Chelmsford firefighter Josh Abbott was playing hockey at Cyclones Arena when the man was stricken, Hudson Fire Captain Kevin W. Grebinar wrote in a letter to the Chelmsford fire chief.

“[Abbott] was in the right place at a critical time,” read the letter, which Chelmsford fire officials posted on Facebook.

Abbott began to perform CPR while other players used a defibrillator, the letter read. By the time responders arrived shortly after 10 p.m., the man was conscious and alert, Grebinar wrote.
