Off-duty Maine firefighter rescues man from pond in Cape Cod

CAPE COD (WGME) — An off-duty firefighter from Maine is credited with helping save the life of a man in Massachusetts.

Kennebunk Fire-Rescue says David Tapley, a firefighter and EMT, was vacationing with family in Cape Cod at Dyer Pond on Saturday when he saw someone trying to help a man who was struggling in the water.

“She pulled him up, and when she pulled him up, his color – as we’re trained – his color was the color of my shirt (dark blue), which is never, never good. So, I kind of zipped over to him and looked at everyone in the crowd and said, ‘We need to get him to shore now.’ I was doing about 2 and a half minutes of CPR. I was about ready to switch and check pulses and he started to come to a little bit,” Tapley told WBZ-TV.

Tapley says the man was responsive by the time first responders arrived from Wellfleet Fire Department.

The Wellfleet Fire Department says Tapley saved the man’s life.
