Springfield Fire Department welcomes six new recruits

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Mayor Sarno and Fire Commissioner B.J. Calvi gathered Friday morning at the Raymond Sullivan Safety Complex for a Pinning Ceremony. It was a very exciting day for the six newest firefighter’s who are now officially promoted to be the public safety officials they have been working hard to be.

Jason Arnold, Shane Dearborn, Zachary Giordano, Celestino Martinez, Jullisses Perales, and Justin Velez are the six who were honored by Commissioner Calvi and had the opportunity to celebrate afterwards with their families.

“It’s something special that we do when we pin the new candidates, so it’s definitely something special to come here at the station and go through it with everyone,” said Springfield Firefighter Celestino Martinez.

All of the new firefighter’s spent time after the ceremony taking pictures, and soaking in the moment with all of their family and friends who came to support them.

Mayor Sarno says the city deeply appreciates their bravery and efforts because when everyone else is running out of that burning building, they’re running in to save lives.
