Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said Thursday a $25,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the death of Martijn Stuurman at his residence on Aldrich Road, Chesnee.

Stuurman lived in Aiken County from November 2017 to April 2021, when he relocated to Spartanburg County, Wright said.

“This gentleman is a very well-known figure in the horse arena,” Wright said. “He was a horse trainer and breeder.”

Martijn Stuurman

Wright said he believes there is a potential person of interest in the Aiken area. Stuurman also had ties across the country, including South Dakota, Main and Massachusetts, he said.

Wright declined to discuss details of how Stuurman died.

“We got a call to do a key check,” he said. “Somebody was concerned about him and we went in and found him deceased. It was not self-inflicted.

“He came to Spartanburg and somebody killed him. We feel like whoever did this may be from Aiken, South Carolina. Around here, we don’t care who you are, we just want to make sure we get justice served.”
