1 killed, 1 wounded after gunfire erupts in Talladega County; reward offered for tips

One man was killed and another was wounded in a hail of gunfire Sunday night in Talladega County, authorities said.

A reward starting at $1,000 was offered for information leading to the identity or arrest of the suspect responsible for killing 22-year-old Sylacauga resident Dontez Lamar Garrett, according to Central Alabama CrimeStoppers.

Talladega County sheriff’s deputies were called to the 100 block of Seminole Avenue in Sylacauga around 8 p.m. Sunday on a report of a person shot. Sylacauga police and Sylacauga ambulance also responded to the scene.

That’s where officers found Garrett suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another victim, only identified as a 25-year-old Sylacauga man, was found shot. He was taken to Coosa Valley Medical Center before being helicoptered to UAB Hospital.

Two vehicles were also damaged by gunfire from the incident.

The investigation into the shooting was ongoing as of Monday evening.
