San Antonio couple pleads guilty to severe child abuse, woman receives 30-year sentence

SAN ANTONIO – A couple plead guilty in a child abuse case, one sentenced to 30 years in prison, according to Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

Norma Lisa Elizondo, 47 and James Cannady plead guilty to the Injury of a Child with Serious Bodily Injury. Sentencing for Cannady remains pending the completion of a pre-sentencing investigation. Elizondo was sentenced to 30 years in the 187th District Court.

On Feb. 18, 2023, Elizondo and Cannady were apprehended after bringing their child to the hospital with severe malnutrition.

The 10-year-old special needs child required a blood transfusion to save her life after weighing 27 pounds in the hospital.

“No parent should ever knowingly and deliberately starve their child,” said Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Joe Gonzales, “The 30-year sentence for Norma Elizondo shows how serious Bexar County is about protecting children. The sentence for James Cannady awaits the findings of a pre-sentencing investigation ordered by the judge.”
