Firefighter who helped save Mishawaka man trapped in his car for 6 days speaks out

We are learning more about the dramatic rescue of the Mishawaka man trapped for six days after crashing his truck under a bridge in Porter County.

Days after hearing Matt Reum’s story of survival, crews now sharing what they faced when they rescued him.

Jordan Bucy, and his team of first responders, are heroes for safely rescuing Matt Reum from this accident, but according to Bucy, they are just first responders doing their job.

He credits training and effective teamwork to the success behind this impressive rescue.

We recently gained access to the body cam footage that shows the moments after two fishermen found Matt Reum in Porter County.

First responders rescued him, before he was airlifted to South Bend Memorial.

Reum spent 6 days in his crashed car, unable to move, surviving on rainwater.

Portage Firefighter Jordan Bucy was the third responder on the scene.

He recalls the moments of rescuing Reum after being trapped in his crashed vehicle.

“Kind of coming up with a plan and how we were going to cut the vehicle out from around the patient and how we were going to accomplish that. So that’s kind of when I got involved in the extrication portion of it.” said Jordan Bucy – Master Firefighter Paramedic Portage Fire Department.”

Bucy humbly denounced the term “heroes” and said his team was just doing their job.

“I can speak for the entire Fire Department as well. We don’t do it for this, we don’t do it for this aspect to you know, get the Pats on the back and things like that this is our job. And we show up to work every every day ready to do our job.” said Jordan Bucy – Master Firefighter Paramedic Portage Fire Department.”

Bucy said, seeing the online updates and positive attitude from Matt brings a smile to his face.

“It definitely is a bright light in what we do. There’s quite often, we do feel like we do good. But it’s not very often that we can see the follow up with these patients and continually track.” said Jordan Bucy – Master Firefighter Paramedic Portage Fire Department.”

Bucy said, the smiles from Matt go back to the first time they met.

“He was upbeat with us. He was, you know, joking with us, he was talking with us. And in turn that actually made it easier for us to do our job.” said Jordan Bucy – Master Firefighter Paramedic Portage Fire Department.”

WSBT has been in contact with Matt who says he is working towards a potential discharge, which shows the great work him and his medical officials with Beacon health have done these last few weeks.
