On her way home from work. The killing middle school teacher pulled onto the eastbound ramp on I-384 she saw *** car pulled over smoke coming out and the driver John was hanging out of the door. Well I saw the smoke. I didn’t see the fire. So I’m like, it’s something just breaking down and it was smoking. And then why is he now out of the car yet? Something just didn’t sit right with me. The fire started inside the van. But the timing of the rescue was everything. And I said, oh my goodness, are you stuck? How can I help you? And he said, I’m handicapped, I need my chair. She grabbed his wheelchair and rushed him to safety. Moments later the van burned to the ground. Now she’s being called *** hero truly her seconds of thinking or quick thinking literally save this man heroes, *** word that we use kind of lately in today’s society. But this was truly *** heroic event. This woman saved this man’s life in an intense situation. Her instincts just kicked in. A teacher pulled a man and his wheelchair from a burning car in Manchester, Connecticut, on Thursday — almost certainly saving his life. On her way home from work, middle school teacher Heather Sica-Leonard pulled onto the highway when she saw a car pulled over, smoke coming out and the driver, John, was hanging out of the door. “I saw the smoke, I didn’t see the fire so I’m like, is something broken down and it was smoking? And then, why is he not out of the car yet? Something just didn’t sit right with me,” said Sica-Leonard.The fire started inside the van, but the timing of the rescue was everything. She grabbed John’s wheelchair and rushed him to safety. Moments later, the van burned to the ground.Now, she’s being called a hero. “Truly her seconds of quick-thinking literally saved this man,” said Gordon Macmillan with the Manhester Fire Rescue EMS Department. “Hero’s a word we use kind of lightly in today’s society, but this was truly a heroic event, this woman saving this man’s life.” Sica-Leonard says she hopes if people see someone in distress, they will also stop to help.She also said John’s daughter told her he’s doing okay.
