Kansas City, Missouri police say a rare guitar has been returned to its owner. Nearly three years after it was initially stolen, the handmade Slovakian guitar was retrieved.

The guitar, a Neuser five-string bass guitar, was stolen in 2019. The instrument is no longer in production and there aren’t many in circulation.

The guitar traditionally sells for well over $1,000.

Its owner, only identified as Kirk by police, saved up to buy the guitar back in 2003. A week before it was returned, Kirk spotted the guitar for sale online and contacted KCPD detective Matthew Smith.

Police say after several attempts, Smith was able to make contact with the seller, identified as Jeanette. She was immediately willing to cooperate and went to Center Patrol to match the serial number on the bass guitar.

In the past several years, the guitar had been bought and sold multiple times since its initial theft. Jeanette was selling the handmade instrument to pay to fix her vehicles’ brakes.

Kirk gave Jeanette a reward worth more than her expenses and what she was seeking to sell the guitar for. Detective Smith says Jeanette’s cooperation was key in getting the beloved item back to its owner.
