Unlocked vehicle leads to purse, keys being stolen in home invasion in village of Windsor, authorities say

An unlocked vehicle led to a purse and keys being stolen in a home invasion in the village of Windsor overnight Monday into Tuesday, authorities reported.

Deputies were called to a home on the 6600 block of Wendell Way shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday after the owners woke up to find someone had entered their home while they were sleeping, Dane County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Elise Schaffer said in a statement.

A home security company called Boundary allows homeowners to hire a burglar to test their home security. The consultation involves the felon explaining how they would gain entry to the owner’s home. The ex-burglar will also offer the homeowner tips on how to improve their security against potential robbers. “Most of us don’t have the mindset of a burglar and, therefore wouldn’t spot half of the places they might be able to gain access to in our homes,” Robin Knox, CEO Of Boundary. The company’s employees include people who had been burgling homes for up to 12 years. Boundary are looking to expand the service after receiving large amounts of interest. The company are currently hiring burglars with at least one conviction and have knowledge of domestic burglaries.

The thief entered the home by taking a garage door opener left inside an unlocked vehicle in the driveway. Once inside the garage, the thief entered the home and made off with a purse and a set of keys, Schaffer said.

Deputies are reviewing video doorbell footage and have contacted residents of neighboring homes to gather potential video evidence, Schaffer said.

Police ask that anyone with information on the incident contact them at 608-284-6900. Tipsters may remain anonymous by contacting Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014 or P3Tips.com. Individuals contacting Crime Stoppers can receive a reward of up to $1,000 for tips that lead to an arrest.
