Charges have been filed against a Kansas City, Missouri, man accused of assisting two inmates that escaped from the Cass County jail on Monday.Steven Lydell Williams, Sr., 64, has been charged with a single count of aiding or assisting in an escape.The inmates, Trevor Scott Sparks, 33, of Kansas City and Sergio Perez Martinez, 43, Panorama City, California, escaped confinement around 10 p.m. Monday night. While they still remain at large, both Perez Martinez and Sparks have been charged with their escape in the same criminal complaint as Williams. Williams has been taken into custody and is scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon. A redacted affidavit in the case confirms that Williams is believed to be a known associate of Sparks.Sparks led a $4.1 million criminal drug business, which distributed 520 kilos of meth in the Kansas City, Springfield, St. Joseph and St. Louis areas over a two-year period from the beginning of 2017 until he was arrested in December 2018. The affidavit also notes that the most notable connection between Williams and Spark is a garage located at 345 Quincy Ave. in Kansas City. Law enforcement says Williams allowed Sparks to use the garage for his drug operation. The garage was used to store a black Dodge Challenger containing the deceased body of homicide victim James Hampton in August 2018.Federal investigators believe Sparks’ criminal enterprise is linked to two murders, including Hampton, and multiple violent assaults.On Tuesday, Williams was arrested driving a 2001 white Mercedes bearing a California license plate. The same vehicle is the one believed to have picked up Perez Martinez and Sparks from a Casey General Store in Harrisonville, Missouri, during their escape on Monday.Authorities say further investigation revealed a plan, crafted across several phone calls, between Williams and Sparks to pick them up from the gas station late Monday evening. Williams, Sparks and Perez Martinez were also captured on video shortly after midnight on Tuesday entering an apartment belonging to Williams located in Kansas City. Little is known about Perez Martinez and any potential connection to Williams or Sparks. Perez-Martinez was being held at the jail for drug possession.Police did not confirm specifically how the inmates were able to escape the jail itself but did say that they did not believe their method could be replicated in the future. Williams’s apartment at the St. James apartments located near 6138 Citadel Drive is both inmates’ last known location. The two prisoners had a roughly seven-hour head start on authorities in their escape efforts.Sheriff’s deputies did not realize the two men were missing until about 5 a.m. Tuesday at breakfast.If you see either man do not approach them. Sparks is considered armed and dangerous.
