A woman has been described as a ‘local hero’ after she saved a man’s life when a car went up in flames on Hessle Road yesterday.

The incident, which happened at around 6pm yesterday (Friday, April 28), saw a black four-by-four go up in flames on a busy commercial stretch of Hessle Road. Humberside Fire & Rescue Service confirmed their attendance at the scene, with one hose reel and small tools used to extinguish the fire.

After seeing the rear of the car catch fire and noticing the owner was still inside, a woman sprang to action and alerted him to the danger by banging on the window and helping him out of the vehicle. Two minutes later, the entire car went up in flames, engulfing the cabin.

Sharing the news on Facebook, Cari posted: “I am in sooo much shock.. went to Heron’s on Hessle Road.. as I’m walking up to it I see a car boot on fire.. go up to the car an a elderly man’s sat in it waiting for his wife to come out of chippy.

“So I have to start banging on the window, helping him out because he didn’t have a clue what was going on or that his car was on fire while he was sat in it. Got the man out and about two mins later it all went up. I’m so happy he’s alive and nothing happened to him.”
