Two make court appearance, charged with armed robbery, burglary at Carson City gas stations

Two 18-year-old men were formally charged with armed robbery and other alleged crimes following a holdup Sunday at a Carson City convenience store and burglary at a gas station.

Marshall Williams, 18 of Dresslerville in Douglas County and Marty Avila, of Sparks, both 18, were charged with the following offenses: felony robbery with the use of a deadly weapon, burglary with a deadly weapon or firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, aiding or permitting child to possess a firearm, gross misdemeanor destruction of property, misdemeanor larceny and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Both were in a Carson City courtroom on Wednesday for their initial appearance on the felonies, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor charges, said Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury. The two were appointed counsel and a preliminary hearing has been scheduled in their cases for March 17.

Bail for both of them was set at $75,000 each.

A third adult, a female who was arrested Sunday is no longer in custody. Charges have not been filed and the matter is under review, said Woodbury.

Regarding the status of the other arrests from Sunday, three are juveniles who were taken to the juvenile detention center and will be going through the juvenile court process, said Woodbury. At this time, hearings have not been scheduled.

The bookings and charges center around the armed robbery of the Extra Mile convenience store and gas station at around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. The robberies were carried out by two males, both armed with handguns. Both cash and store products were taken. No injuries were reported.

Later that morning, the Sheriff’s Office received information of an overnight commercial burglary at the East William Street Chevron gas station. While processing the scene, deputies observed digital surveillance data that suggested the burglary was carried out by persons similar in descriptions to the armed robbery. At the time of reporting, there were no injuries and only products were taken, according to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Later, deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in an apartment at the 600 block of South Division Street. When deputies arrived, a female from the apartment was contacted. She denied any disturbance and refused to allow deputies inside the residence, according to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. Before leaving the area, alert deputies observed items outside the apartment that resembled reported stolen properties from the burglary and the robbery. Additional deputies responded to the scene and secured the area.

A search warrant was obtained to enter the apartment. A total of six people were in the apartment, three adults and three juveniles, all exiting the apartment at different times. After the apartment was cleared, detectives entered the home and searched the area.

During the search, items were seized associated with the earlier robbery, the earlier burglary, and other reported burglaries and attempted burglaries that have taken place in Carson City over the last month, including two stolen handguns, according to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

The armed robbery and other crimes remain under investigation by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. We will update as more information becomes available.
