Video: Thief raids Marysville apartment mailboxes

Tenants at a Marysville apartment community are concerned over ongoing mail thefts happening in their own backyard.Video shared with KCRA 3 shows a man in a motorcycle helmet working his way down a row of mailboxes at Hunter’s Landing Apartments. He unlocks the doors to dozens of them, rummages for a few minutes and takes off with the contents inside. “I was watching them in my box, with my mail in it,” said property manager Dyana Heer. “It was devastating.”Heer said this is the third time since the weekend that someone has stolen mail off the property. She believes the person, or people, involved first vandalized one of the mailboxes and removed a locking mechanism inside, which contains the master key hold. Heer thinks using that, someone was able to make a key giving access to everyone’s mail. ” pretty violated,” said Howard Quillin, a five-year resident of the property. “There could be a lot of mail with social security in it, medical receipts in it.”Meanwhile, the postal service continues to deliver the mail. Heer says her request to the local post office to put a hold on deliveries has not worked. “I’m trying to protect the privacy of everyone in Marysville at this point,” Heer said. KCRA 3 brought her concerns to federal agents at the U.S. Postal Service. “The mere possession of that key or counterfeit key is a federal felony,” U.S. Postal Inspector Jim Fitch said. Mail theft can lead to spending up to five years in federal prison and a possible fine of up to $250,000. After our outreach, Fitch said his team would follow up with Heer to investigate her case. There is a $10,000 reward for anyone who comes forward with information on the Marysville mail thefts that leads to an arrest and conviction.
